First,
American Indians. Next, Spanish explorers. Then, in 1850, this 30-mile
stretch of beach was discovered by Leonard Destin. He fell in love
immediately. With the emerald waters. The sea oats, nesting sea
turtles, soaring sand dunes and magnolia trees with blossoms the
size of saucers. And of course, the sugar-white sand — the
gorgeous result of Appalachian quartz being ground by the waves
over centuries. But most of all, he was smitten by the best fishing
he’d ever known: from grouper and cobia to triggerfish, king
mackerel
and more.
In the mid 1930's, the completion of the Destin Bridge opened the
small village to the world. Since then, Destin has been coined many
names: the “Emerald Coast,” “World's Luckiest
Fishing Village” and more. But you can just call it home.
